Hugh Cha in "King and I" musical 한인 유학생, 뮤지컬 왕과 나 주연

(보스톤 = 보스톤코리아) 김현천 기자 = 브로드웨이 진출을 꿈꾸며 각고의 시간을 보내왔던 한인 유학생 차형진(미국명 휴 차, 28세) 씨가 릴릭 극단 오클라호마 무대에서 공연되는 ‘왕과 나’의 주인공을 맡아 주목을 끌고 있다. BOSTON - Dreaming of being on Broadway, 28-year-old Hyung-Jin Cha (known as Hugh Cha in America) has lived an aspiring and hardworking life. Cha's success playing a lead role in the Lyric Theater of Oklahoma's stage of the "King and I" has become a major accomplishment in America.

알란 뮤라카 감독의 이 작품에서 차 씨는 텀팀 공주와 애절한 사랑으로 죽음에 이르는 룬 타 역을 맡아 멜 사그라도 막협(Mel Sagrado Maghuyop), 성윤정 등 톱스타들과 오는 7월 9일부터 13일까지 열연할 예정이다.

Directed by Alan Muraoka, Cha plays the lead role of Lun Tha, an ambassador who falls in love with the princess Tuptim which ultimately leads him to his death. Other lead actors in the production include Mel Maghuyop and Youn-Jeong Sung. The musical is playing from July 9 to July 13. 현재 보스톤 컨저버토리(Boston Conservatory) 뮤지컬 석사 과정에 장학생으로 재학중인 차 군은 이번 ‘왕과 나’ 외 보스톤 미술관(MFA)에서 주최한 컨서트 ‘사운드 오브 뮤직’, 알츠하이머협회 주최 아카이브 & 이칭스 등에 출연하는 등 활발한 활동을 하고 있다.

Cha is currently working on his MFA in Musical Theater at the Boston Conservatory, and is the head scholarship recipient of the program. Hugh Cha has been actively performing in Boston, and recently appeared in "Sound of Music" at the Museum of Fine Arts and Archives & Etchings sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.

중학교 시절 유타 주로 유학을 왔던 차 군은 외로움을 피아노 연주로 달랬고, 고등학교 시절에는 비보이 활동을 하는 등 예능에 남다른 관심을 둬 왔다.

Cha has always been interested in arts. When he first came to the United States to attend middle school, he soothed his loneliness by playing the piano. During his high school years, he started breakdancing.

고등학교를 졸업해서는 바로 영화 주인공으로 발탁, ‘A STORY OF THE WOOD(민지홍 감독 처녀작)’에 출연해 독립영화제에서 수상의 영광을 안기도 했지만, 사업가인 부친의 영향으로 브리검영 대학교(Brigham Young University)에 입학, 비지니스를 전공했다.

After graduating from high school, he was casted as a lead in a film, "A Story of the Woods" directed by Ji-Hong Min and earned multiple awards at various independent film festivals. However, he decided to follow his father's will and attend Brigham Young University (BYU) to study business. 하지만, 뉴욕의 브로드웨이 공연을 본 것이 계기가 되어 대학 3학년때 뮤지컬로 전공을 바꿨다. “무대 위에 서면 느껴지는 에너지, 그게 너무 좋았다”는 그다.

However, after seeing a few Broadway musicals in New York City, he switched his major to Music Dance Theater during his junior year at BYU. Cha said, "I loved the energy and liveliness I felt on stage." 2년 여전 뮤지컬 학사과정을 마친 후 뉴욕으로 부푼 꿈을 안고 갔던 차 군은 그곳에서 뜨거운 인생의 굴곡을 맛봐야 했다.

Cha moved to NYC after completing his undergraduate studies two years ago to fulfill his dreams. However, in his efforts to make it onto the stage -- he tasted the experience of failure that seemed to last a lifetime. 어디든 오디션이 있다면 다 찾아갔지만, 자그마한 동양인 남자 배우에게 돌아오는 것은 실패의 쓴잔 뿐. 1년 간 그가 응시한 오디션은 180여 회에 달했지만, 어느 한 곳에서도 불합격의 원인을 말해준 곳은 없었다고. 실력이 늘 리 없었다.

Cha went to auditions whenever and wherever he could, but no one was looking to hire a small Asian actor with no experience -- especially for a big stage production. Determined, Cha auditioned at least 180 times for one year without any success. On top of the frustration of not obtaining any parts, there was no explanation for why he didn't get the roles. Without any feedback, Cha's acting skills stalled. 오디션에 올인을 해야 했던 차 군은 생활비를 벌기 위해 음식점에서 서빙을 해야 했다. 오디션이 없는 날은 하루 15시간씩 일을 해야 겨우 생활을 버텨 나갈 수 있었던 그는 몸이 고단한 것보다는 자신의 전공과 관계없는 일을 하며 비인격적인 대우를 받을 때가 힘들었다고 털어놨다.

In order to have the flexibility to audition, Cha worked at a local restaurant in NYC. Some days he spent 15 hours working just to barely make ends meet financially. For him the most difficult part was not the physical exhaustion of the job, but the fact he was doing something that didn't relate to his dream and he had to deal with being mistreated by customers and management at the restaurant. 그렇게 연속 낙방만 하던 그에게 드디어 행운의 여신이 찾아왔다. 자그마한 극단의 오디션에 합격해 무대에 서기 시작 것. 그러나 동양인인 그에게 찾아오는 배역은 소수 민족 이민자 역할에 국한된 것이 다반사였다. 6개월 뼈빠지게 일해서 번 돈은 300불.

After a continuous string of rejections, Cha finally got an opportunity to be casted in a show. However, it was an off-off Broadway stage that only paid $300 for six months of work, and the characters he portrayed were mainly racially discriminated roles. “동양인에게는 브로드웨이는 고사하고 작은 극단조차도 설 기회가 거의 오지 않는다. 극본 자체가 동양인이 등장할 일 없는 미국인들 이야기이고 더구나 간혹 미국인 역할을 맡게 되더라도 발음과 억양이 가장 문제가 됐다”는 것이 차 씨의 말이다.

"Not only Broadway, but small theater performance opportunities are rarely available for Asian performers," Cha says. "There are no stories about Asians in general. Even when I was given an opportunity to audition for an American story role, my Korean accent became an issue and I would lose parts." 차 씨는 늘 생활고에 시달리느라 연습 시간을 제대로 가져보지 못하고 발음 교정을 받을만한 여유도 없이 지내는 것에 대해 고민하기 시작했다. 그리고 자신을 이끌어 줄 한인남성 배우 멘토가 미국에 없다는 사실을 깨달았다.

Due to financial constraints, Cha didn't have the time or money to find an accent reduction coach. He also knew there were no other Korean male actors that could mentor him through the difficulties he was experiencing with musical theater in the U.S. 또한 한인 남성으로서만 보여진다면 브로드웨이에 서더라도 자신에게 가능한 최고의 배역은 ‘왕과 나’의 루 타까지가 한계일 것이라는 생각을 하게 됐다. ‘정말 잘해야겠구나, 실력을 갖춰야겠구나’라는 데 생각이 미치자 그는 주저없이 보스톤 컨저버터리에 지원했다. 마침 학교에서는 그를 장학생으로 받아들였다.

Cha realized that if he was only seen as an international Korean male performer with an accent, his roles might be limited to the discriminated Asian roles he was now doing. He wanted to overcome these challenges and become an exceptional performer. Without any hesitation, Hugh Cha applied to the best musical theater school in America that offered a Masters Program, and was accepted into the Boston Conservatory as a top scholarship recipient. 학교 수업 외 미국 각 지역 발음부터 연기, 노래 등을 연습하느라 거의 매일을 아침 9시부터 새벽 1시까지 학교에서 보낸다는 그는 “연습에만 열중할 수 있는 게 행복하다”고 말했다. 뉴욕에서는 생활비를 벌어야 했기 때문에 연습을 할 시간이 없어 늘 스트레스에 시달렸다는 것.

Cha's efforts to become a great artist continue today. He invests his time from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. (yes you read that right) almost every day crafting his talents, such as accent reduction, roleplaying, and singing. Considering his first year in New York was spent working non-stop and just trying to survive, Cha says, "I'm happy that I am able to invest my time in practicing." 한인 남성 뮤지컬 배우로서 최초의 ‘왕과 나’ 출연자이자 주연을 맡은 그는 며칠 후 뉴욕에서 리허설을 가진 후 공연을 위해 오클라호마로 떠난다.

Cha is one of the first Korean male musical performers to be casted as a lead role in a major American musical production. He will soon be heading to New York for rehearsal and then leave to Oklahoma to perform. 공연 후 보스톤에 돌아오면 남은 기간 학업과 함께 무대 활동에 열정을 쏟겠다는 다짐과 함께 “한인 남성 뮤지컬 배우로서 당당하게 서고 싶다. 난 멘토가 돼 줄 선배를 찾을 수가 없었지만, 내 경험을 바탕으로 후배들을 위한 길잡이이자 조력자가 돼 주고 싶다”고 말했다.

After the production, Hugh Cha plans to come back to Boston to finish his studies. He also said, " I want to proudly be on stage as a Korean male musical performer in America.
