Debut on Boston Musical Stage 뮤지컬 배우 휴차 보스톤 무대 진출
(보스톤 = 보스톤코리아) 김현천 기자 = 한인 유학생으로 브로드 웨이의 꿈을 키우고 있는 뮤지컬 배우 차형진 씨(보스톤 컨저버토리 석사 과정)가 보스톤 뮤지컬 무대에 진출하는 등 브로드 웨이 진출을 위한 발판 다지기에 힘쏟고 있다.
BOSTON - As a Korean international student, musical actor Hyung-jin Cha (차형진), who goes by Hugh Cha (휴차) in the U.S., is debuting on a Boston musical stage and is seeking to fulfill his dreams of debuting on a Broadway musical stage.
차형진 씨는 오는 6 월 3 일부터 15 일까지 노스 쇼어 극장( North Shore Music Theatre, 62 Dunham Road, Beverly, MA 01915)에서 공연되는 브로드 웨이 뮤지컬 ‘애니씽 고우즈(Anything Goes)’에서 중국인 선교사 ‘룩’의 역할을 맡아 브로드웨이의 베레랑 연출가, 안무가, 배우들과 함께 공연할 예정이다.
Cha will be performing as Luke, a Chinese missionary in the Broadway Musical "Anything Goes," along with veteran directors, choreographers, and musical actors at the North Shore Musical Theater ( North Shore Music Theatre, 62 Dunham Road, Beverly, MA 01915) from June 3 to June 15.
뮤지컬 ‘애니씽 고우즈’는 뉴욕에서 런던으로 가는 배에 타게 된 남녀들의 여러가지 사연과 서로 얽히고 설키는 과정을 거쳐 진정한 사랑을 찾는다는 내용으로, 남녀의 로맨스를 재미있게 그려낸 작품이다.
"Anything Goes" is a romantic comedy musical that consists of different stories of love between a man and a woman that happens on a boat that travels from New York to London.
이 작품의 연출가 찰스 리폴레(Charle Repole)는 다수의 브로드웨이 공연을 연출하였고 배우로서 토니상 후보에 올랐었다. 또한 안무가 마이클 리치펠드(Michael Lichtefeld)는 브로드웨이에서 총 6 작품의 안무가로서 활동한 바 있다. 음악감독 밀튼 그레인저(Milton Granger)는 브로드웨이 메리 팝핀스의 첫번째 보조 지휘자였으며, 직접 작곡하고 연출한 창작뮤지컬 브론즈미러를 2011 년 뉴욕 오프 브로드웨이 극장에 올렸었다. 차형진 씨는 이때 조연을 맡아 열연하기도 했다. 유학생으로 브로드 웨이 진출을 위해 발판을 닦아 나가는 뮤지컬 배우 차형진 씨.
Carving up the road to debut as a Broadway musical star and as an international student, Charle Repole, the producer of this musical, produced a number of Broadway musicals and was a nominee of the Tony Awards as an actor. The choreographer of this musical, Michael Lichtefeld, choreographed a total of six Broadway musicals. Milton Grander, the musical director, was the assistant director to the first Mary Poppins Broadway, and composed and produced "Bronze Mirror," an off Broadway musical. Hugh Cha was one of the supporting roles in this musical.
차형진 씨는 오는 6 월 뮤지컬 무대에 앞서 지난 수개월 간 뉴욕과 보스톤을 오가며 활발하게 활동했다. 지난 1 월에는 미국에서 오래된 역사를 갖고 있는 극장 중 하나인 굿스피드 극장에 서 창작뮤지컬 ‘프로펄 프레이스’ 에 출연, 동양인 역할이 아닌, 1900 년대 영국 시민과 호랑이 역할을 소화해 냈다.
Hugh Cha has been actively working in Boston and New York for months before landing a role in the June musical.
최근 뉴욕에서 석사 쇼케이스를 성공적으로 마친 차형진 씨는 “뉴욕 에이전트와 매니저로부터 러브콜을 받고 있다”고 밝혔다.
Cha, who recently successfully completed his Masters showcase in New York, has been getting a lot of attention from agents and managers in New York.
“외국인과 계약하기를 꺼려하는 미국 기획사들이었기에 매우 이례적이었다”고 밝힌 차형진 씨는 “7 월부터 계약을 맺어 본격적으로 뉴욕에서 활동할 계획”이라고 말했다.
“It is very unusual for American entertainment agencies to sign with foreigners,” said Cha. “I am planning to be in the New York scene as I sign a contract in July.”
차형진 씨는 브로드 웨이 진출이 확정된 것이냐는 질문에 “에이전트와 매니저들은 브로드 웨이 작품에 오디션을 볼 수 있도록 주선을 해줄 뿐”이라며 “오디션을 통해 출연을 확정 받게 돼야 본격적으로 브로드웨이에 진출하게 되는 것이다. 앞으로도 갈 길은 멀다”고 겸손함을 보였다.
When asked if this was a definite spot for a Broadway debut, Cha humbly stated, “The agency and managers serve as a bridge for getting the opportunity to audition for a Broadway musical. One needs to pass the audition in order to debut on a Broadway stage. It is still a long journey.”
한편, 오는 5 월 보스톤 컨저버토리 석사 과정을 마친 뒤 뉴욕으로 떠나기 전 보스톤 한인사회를 위해 어린이날 기념 뮤지컬 무대를 선사할 예정이다.
Before moving to New York, after completing his Masters at Boston Conservatory in May, Cha will also perform in a special musical stage in celebration of Korean’s Children’s Day.
이 뮤지컬 무대는 스프라노 정종은 씨가 이끄는 Boston Korean Musical Singers 의 세번째 아마추어 뮤지컬 콘서트에 찬조 출연하는 것이다. 뮤지컬은 디즈니 곡들 위주로 구성돼 가족 단위로 뮤지컬을 즐기기에 좋은 기회다. 공연은 5 월 10 일 오후 6 시 ECC (보스턴한인교회위치)콘서트홀에서 열린다.
Cha will support soprano Jongeun Jeong’s Boston Korean Musical Singers’ 3rd amateur musical concert. It is a great opportunity for families to gather, as they will perform several Disney musical numbers. The Performance will be held at the ECC (Boston Korean Church) Concert Hall at 6 p.m. on May 10th.
